Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action RPG where you explore a massive continent, build a team of elemental fighters, and chain reactions together to destroy everything in your path. It's genuinely one of the best live-service games available right now — and you can dive in without spending a single dollar. This Genshin Impact beginner guide covers exactly what to do first, how to push progression efficiently, and which traps catch almost every newcomer. What Genshin Impact is

Developed by HoYoverse, Genshin Impact drops you into Teyvat — a world of seven nations, each tied to a different element. The core loop is straightforward: explore, fight, complete quests, collect characters, and get stronger. Everything connects back to elemental combat and team synergy.
Characters and weapons are obtained through "Wishes"-the game's gacha system. You spend Primogems (the main premium currency) to pull from banners, hoping to land five-star characters or weapons. The good news: the game is very playable without heavy spending, and smart resource management takes you far.
Adventure Rank (AR) is your account level. It gates almost everything-co-op access, domain rewards, event participation, and story content. Raising it fast early on should be your first real goal.
A few things that set this game apart:
- Seven elements interacting in dozens of reaction combinations
- The Traveler (your protagonist) can swap elements throughout the story-starting with Anemo, then unlocking Geo, Electro, and Dendro
- Deep exploration rewarding curiosity with chests, puzzles, and hidden quests
- Team building that rewards experimentation over rigid meta-following
You can find everything you need to know about the official game at the Genshin Impact Official Site.
First things to do

The opening hours matter a lot. Here's the exact order you should approach things:
- Choose your Traveler twin (Lumine or Aether): Cosmetic difference only. Lumine has slightly stronger charged attacks; Aether moves marginally faster. Pick whoever you like visually.
- Follow the main story quests: Archon and Story Quests are your fastest AR gains early. They unlock systems, characters, and regions-don't skip them.
- Unlock Statues of the Seven and Teleport Waypoints: These let you fast-travel, heal outside combat, increase stamina capacity, and earn small Primogem rewards just for discovering them.
- Collect everything you see: Flowers, ores, fruits, fish, mushrooms-pick it all up. You'll need obscure materials for ascensions you can't predict yet.
- Complete Daily Commissions (unlocks at AR 12): Four short daily tasks that together deliver around 60 Primogems and solid Adventure EXP. This is the single most important daily habit in the entire game.
- Explore the world: Chests, environmental puzzles, and NPC interactions all grant Adventure EXP and materials. When story progress stalls, exploration fills the gap.
- Mark important items on your map: Use map pins for Oculi (Anemoculus, Geoculus, etc.) and rare nodes you can't grab yet. Trust me-unmarked Oculi are a nightmare to track later.
- Link your HoYoLAB account: Takes two minutes and gives you daily check — in rewards including Primogems and Mora, just for logging in.
- Unlock Expeditions (AR 14): Send characters out on timed resource-gathering missions while you play or sleep. Completely passive income.
- Try co-op mode (AR 16): Faster boss kills, domain clears, and a chance to get help from higher-level players in worlds you haven't unlocked yet.
Quick-reference checklist for the absolute first session:
- Choose your twin
- Progress the main story
- Unlock waypoints and Statues of the Seven
- Do daily commissions every single day
- Collect and mark resources as you go
- Link HoYoLAB for daily rewards
Prioritize completing the main story and daily commissions every day to unlock features and maximize early progression.
Combat and elemental reactions

Seven elements power every fight in Teyvat: Anemo (Wind), Geo (Earth), Electro (Electric), Dendro (Grass), Hydro (Water), Pyro (Fire), and Cryo (Ice). Each character wields exactly one. Stacking different elements on enemies triggers reactions — and reactions are where real damage comes from.
| Reaction | Elements Involved | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Melt | Pyro + Cryo | 2x DMG (Pyro on Cryo), 1.5x (Cryo on Pyro) |
| Vaporize | Pyro + Hydro | 2x DMG (Pyro on Hydro), 1.5x (Hydro on Pyro) |
| Burning | Dendro + Pyro | Pyro damage over time |
| Quicken | Dendro + Electro | Enables Spread or Aggravate |
| Spread | Quicken + Dendro | 1.25x Dendro DMG |
| Aggravate | Quicken + Electro | 1.5x Electro DMG |
| Bloom | Dendro + Hydro | Creates Dendro Cores (explosive seeds) |
| Hyperbloom | Dendro Core + Electro | Homing Dendro missiles |
| Burgeon | Dendro Core + Pyro | AoE Dendro explosion |
| Electro-Charged | Electro + Hydro | Damage over time |
| Superconduct | Electro + Cryo | AoE Cryo DMG, reduces Physical RES by 50% |
| Overload | Electro + Pyro | AoE explosion with knockback |
| Freeze | Cryo + Hydro | Temporarily immobilizes target |
| Shatter | Attack frozen enemy | Extra DMG from Geo or blunt hits |
| Swirl | Anemo + Element | Spreads and amplifies elemental DMG to nearby foes |
| Crystallize | Geo + Element | Creates an elemental shield absorbing damage |
Practical combat advice worth ingraining early:
- Use Elemental Sight (middle mouse or assigned key) constantly — it reveals elemental traces on enemies and hidden collectibles nearby
- Enemy shields require specific counters: Geo shields break with Geo, Cryo Fatui shields melt against Pyro, and so on-brute forcing rarely works
- Free characters cover enough elemental variety to experiment with multiple reaction types from the start
- The difference between ignoring reactions and using them intentionally is enormous damage-wise
Melt and Vaporize hit hardest of any reaction when triggered correctly. Hyperbloom and Burgeon teams have become fan favorites for their satisfying burst damage. Getting comfortable with even two or three reaction types early makes the whole game click faster.
Characters and beginner teams

Free characters and their elements/weapons
Every new player gets a solid starter roster without spending anything. Here's the full breakdown:
| Character | Element | Weapon | How to Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traveler | Anemo/Geo/Electro/Dendro | Sword | Starting character |
| Amber | Pyro | Bow | Main story (very early) |
| Kaeya | Cryo | Sword | Main story (early Mondstadt) |
| Lisa | Electro | Catalyst | Main story (early Mondstadt) |
| Barbara | Hydro | Catalyst | Early story quest / events |
| Noelle | Geo | Claymore | Beginner's Banner (guaranteed) |
| Xiangling | Pyro | Polearm | Spiral Abyss Floor 3-3 |
| Collei | Dendro | Bow | Early Sumeru quest / events |
| Lynette | Anemo | Sword | Introductory events |
Xiangling is worth prioritizing-she's one of the strongest four-star characters in the entire game and she's completely free.
Building your first team
Four characters. That's the team size, and early on that number should also represent your total investment target. Spreading resources across eight different characters is the fastest route to being weak everywhere.
Ideal early team structure:
- Main DPS-the character who spends most time on the field dealing damage
- Sub-DPS-applies elements or deals off-field damage
- Support-healer (Barbara) or shielder (Noelle)
- Buffer-provides team-wide stat boosts or enables reactions
Running two characters of the same element also unlocks Elemental Resonance bonuses:
| Elemental Resonance | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Fervent Flames (Pyro+Pyro) | +25% ATK, reduced Cryo debuff duration |
| Soothing Water (Hydro+Hydro) | +25% Max HP, reduced Pyro debuff duration |
| Impetuous Winds (Anemo+Anemo) | Reduced stamina use, +10% Move Speed, shorter Skill CD |
| High Voltage (Electro+Electro) | 100% chance to generate Electro particle on reaction, reduced Hydro debuff duration |
| Sprawling Greenery (Dendro+Dendro) | +50 Elemental Mastery, extra EM after Dendro reactions |
| Shattering Ice (Cryo+Cryo) | +15% Crit Rate vs Frozen/Cryo enemies, reduced Electro debuff duration |
| Enduring Rock (Geo+Geo) | +15% shield strength, +15% DMG when shielded, -20% Geo RES on enemies |
| Protective Canopy (4 unique elements) | +15% all elemental and physical resistance |
One more thing about weapons: don't trash your three-star gear blindly. Weapons like the White Tassel (Polearm) and Twin Nephrite (Sword) stay relevant well into mid-game for specific characters. Refine them to max rank if you have duplicates.
Play with characters you enjoy! Genshin Impact is designed so you can clear early content with any team, as long as you learn elemental reactions and build a balanced squad.
Adventure Rank and progression

Adventure Rank is your account's heartbeat. Nearly every unlock-domains, bosses, co-op, events-sits behind an AR threshold. Raising it efficiently early compresses your entire progression timeline.
Best sources of Adventure EXP:
- Main and side story quests (highest single-session gains)
- Daily Commissions, every day without exception
- Opening chests and solving world puzzles
- Adventure Handbook tasks (especially the Experience tab)
- Discovering Teleport Waypoints and Statues of the Seven
Key AR milestones:
- AR 8-Resin system unlocks
- AR 12-Daily Commissions become available
- AR 14-Expeditions unlock
- AR 16-Co-op mode opens
- AR 20-Battle Pass activates
Some AR levels have a hard gate: you must complete an Ascension Quest before the rank counter resumes. These are short but mandatory. Don't panic when progression suddenly stops-check your quest log.
World Level also scales upward at certain AR thresholds. Enemies get tougher, but boss and domain rewards improve meaningfully. It's a fair trade that pushes you to keep characters upgraded.
If you ever feel stuck on AR, open chests. There are hundreds scattered across every region, many locked behind simple puzzles or combat encounters — all of them award Adventure EXP.
Resin, artifacts and resources

Resin system
Original Resin is the game's energy currency — you spend it to claim rewards from domains, world bosses, and ley line outcrops. It regenerates at one point every 8 minutes, capping at 160. Letting it sit at cap means wasting free regeneration, so log in and spend it daily even if just on ley lines for Mora.
Two other resin types matter:
- Condensed Resin-crafted from Crystal Cores and Original Resin (requires Liyue reputation rank 3, unlocked around AR 25). Doubles domain and ley line rewards at the cost of double resin. Efficient when actively farming.
- Fragile Resin-a consumable that restores 60 Original Resin instantly. Do not touch these until AR 45. The community is unanimous on this. Before AR 45, five-star artifact drops from domains aren't guaranteed, making Fragile Resin usage a poor investment.
Artifacts
Artifacts are the gear system-five slots providing main stats and substats that define a character's late-game power. Each has a set bonus that activates with two or four matching pieces.
Early advice is simple:
- Equip whatever drops naturally and matches your character's scaling (ATK% for DPS, HP% for healers)
- Don't farm artifact domains before AR 45-five-star drops aren't reliable, and the RNG will frustrate you for minimal gain
- Four-star Exile set pieces are solid early supports for energy-hungry characters
- Main stats and substat optimization only really matter once you hit higher AR; before that, character levels and weapon upgrades provide far more value per resource
Resource management
A few rules that prevent headaches later:
- Pick up everything-even materials that seem irrelevant now will block an ascension in three weeks
- Never upgrade one-star or two-star weapons; the resource cost isn't worth it
- Some ascension materials only exist in regions you haven't reached yet — this is normal, just plan accordingly
- Mark uncollectable nodes and rare spawns on your map immediately
Avoid using Fragile Resin or farming artifacts before AR 45-doing so wastes valuable resources and makes late-game progression harder.
Beginner mistakes

These are the patterns that slow down almost every new player. Recognizing them early saves weeks of frustration:
- Wasting Fragile Resin before AR 45-the single most common and most impactful mistake. Save every last one.
- Farming artifact domains in early game-RNG-heavy and inefficient before the five-star guarantee threshold. Spend that resin on character ascension bosses or talent domains instead.
- Leveling too many characters at once-diluted resources mean every character stays weak. Pick four and commit.
- Ignoring elemental reactions-especially against shielded enemies like Fatui agents or elemental slimes, the right reaction ends fights in seconds; brute force takes forever.
- Throwing away three-star weapons-White Tassel, Twin Nephrite, and a few others genuinely outperform low-level four-star options on specific characters. Keep at least one of each.
- Upgrading low-rarity gear heavily-one-star and two-star weapons exist only to be fodder for enhancing better gear.
- Spending Primogems on the standard banner-the limited event banners (the "pink wishes") always offer better value. Standard banner pulls should come only from free Acquaint Fates, not Primogems.
- Skipping daily commissions-even one missed day compounds over time. The Primogem income from commissions funds future pulls more reliably than almost anything else.
- Not linking HoYoLAB-two minutes of setup, daily free rewards, complete no-brainer.
- Leaving Oculi unmarked-tracking Anemoculus and Geoculus without map pins turns a manageable collectible hunt into a chaotic mess.
